Examinations and Rules of Evaluation

The Examination system is entirely internal and the evaluation is made  on continuous basis based on Mid-semester Exam, Project Report and presentation and end-semester exam. Teacher who offers the subject  is the evaluator. He/she shall frame all question papers and evaluate them. If the course is offered by more than one teacher, setting of question paper  and evaluation is done jointly.  There is an Examination Committee constituted for the purpose to look into all matters relating to  evaluation.

AttendanceEvery student must attend the classes regularly, without fail. Attendance will be taken by the Faculty at the commencement of each class.   A minimum 75% of attendance for each subject is required to allow the students to appear for the examinations. In the unfortunate event of a student falling sick or remaining absent, on any day, due to any other extra-ordinary circumstance, student should submit a letter addressed to the Coordinator on the next day without fail, duly explaining the reasons for the absence from classes. If the absence is due to sickness, the student should submit a certificate from the Medical Officer evidencing the sickness and fitness thereafter, before reporting back to the classes.  In case the attendance falls short of the stipulated percentage, the student will be debarred from  writing the semester examinations.  Condonation in deserving cases may be considered on a case by case basis on a payment of prescribed condonation fees. Where gross shortage of attendance or gross indiscipline is observed, the Student will not be allowed to undergo internship and consequently will not be allowed to participate in the placement process.

Scheme of Evaluation for this programme shall be as follows:

Attendance: Five (5) marks in each subject shall be assigned to regularity in attendance.

The following is the distribution of Marks for Attendance:

75- 79  1

Every student has to secure a minimum of 75% attendance in each subject. However, in exceptional cases the attendance requirement may be relaxed, but not below the minimum of 67%.

Mid-semester examinationsTwenty (20) marks shall be assigned for Mid-Semester Examination conducted  after two months of teaching.

Student who fails to take the  Mid-Semester Examination for any reason may not ordinarily be given a chance for retake Examination  except in  rare cases.

End-semester / repeat and improvement  examinationFifty (50) marks shall be assigned for End-Semester Examination of a comprehensive nature conducted at the end of the semester.

The Repeat Examination will be held and results will be finalized within 15 days of the commencement of the next semester.  The repeat examination is limited to a total of 50 marks and the marks obtained earlier for the remaining 50 marks will be taken into consideration while determining the grade at the re-examination. The repeat examination shall be conducted only once (excluding the main examination) and grade secured at the repeat examination shall carry letter 'R' at the top.

The students can take an improvement exam on their end-semester examination only. In case of Improvement examination the grade secured by the student at the improvement examination will be taken as the final grade and will carry the letter 'I' at the top indicating that the grade was obtained after 'Improvement Test' and will be recorded in the transcript. There is no opportunity for improvement in project. 

Question papers :   Normally there will be no choice in any question paper.  However, if the teacher feels that  choice is to be provided, then it should  preferably be internal choice not exceeding 25% in any case.

The duration of End-Semester examination shall be 2 to 3 hours. The question papers  may contain problem-oriented questions.

Project and seminar submission : Twenty Five (25) marks shall be assigned for project work, twenty (20) marks for written project and five (5) marks for presentation, in each paper.

While assigning the project titles to the students, the teachers concerned will fix the last dates for submission of draft / final reports of the project and / or seminar papers.

Project and seminar evaluation and the marks requirement:

Projects:
(a)  A student is required to secure a minimum of 10 marks against the prescribed 20 in the project writing;

(b)  A student is also required to secure a minimum of not less than 12½ marks against 25 marks, both project writing and presentation put together. 

Note:  1) Student who fails to secure the minimum of 10 marks out of 20 marks in the project writing is required to re-submit after revision for evaluation before the commencement of the next semester. If he fails to secure the minimum of 10 marks in written portion after re-submission also, he is treated as failed in the course and is required to re-register for the course subsequently in the semester when the course is offered and will submit new draft and do the presentation. 

2)   For a student who has been promoted to the next higher class, as per the promotion rules, the marks obtained in the other segments will be taken for declaration of result after submission of the project on a new topic.

3)   After submitting the revised project and getting the minimum prescribed pass marks in project, if the student fails to secure the minimum 50 marks out of the total marks (100) he can take the repeat examination.

AWARD OF GRADES:  The performance of the students in all subjects is evaluated on a seven point scale with corresponding grade values as mentioned below:

A candidate to be successful has to obtain a minimum of 50% marks or grade equivalent to that (i.e B in every course). A candidate who fails to secure pass mark shall be given one more chance(Re-sit Exam) to complete that subject.

Once a student is declared as failed(F), his subsequent grade will carry 'R' with the grade obtained later. Similarly a student who is not allowed to take End-semester Exam for shortage of attendance and has been asked to re-register, the grade obtained subsequently will carry 'R'

Promotion scheme: No candidate shall be allowed to the second  year unless he has completed all subjects by the end of first year (end of second semester). However a candidate who has failed not more than two subjects may be allowed to move to the second year.

A student admitted to the Masters Degree programme shall have to complete all the prescribed subjects within a maximum period of 4 years including the year of admission to enable him for the award of Degree.
