Prof. N BALASUBRAMANIAN
 
N Balasubramanian is a Professor since 1994 at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, where he was the former Chief Editor of the Institute’s quarterly journal, IIMB Management Review, and currently the Chairman of Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship and also the Chairman of its Centre for Development of Cases and Teaching Aids. He combines the benefits of exposure to both precept and practice. His three and a half decades of industry experience includes over twenty years of varied responsibilities in the Imperial Chemical Industries group of companies in India, and for a while in the United Kingdom; Board level responsibilities at Britannia Industries (a former Huntley Palmer and RJR Nabisco, and current Danone Associate); and, a stint as Corporate Executive Vice President Finance at the diversified Wipro Corporation (currently a leader in terms of market capitalisation) and a member of its Executive Board.

Prof. Balasubramanian has a PhD in Business Finance from Bombay University, is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, All India Management Association, and a member of several other professional bodies. His published works includes Corporate Financial Policies and Shareholder Returns (1993), and as editor and co-editor respectively, Corporate Boards and Governance (1998), Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia (1998), and Management Perspectives: Essays on Managerial Priorities and Management Education (1999).

He has extensively taught, lectured, advised, and written on corporate governance issues, currently his primary area of consulting and research and policy-support interest. In recent months, he has directed and delivered an MBA level elective programmes on Corporate Governance, as well as on Public Policy Perspectives in Corporate Governance and Ethics of Public Decision Making, in post graduate programmes for mid-career civil servants, besides directing Orientation Programmes on Corporate Governance for Company Directors. He has assisted the Confederation of Indian Industry’s National Committee on Corporate Governance in revising and updating parts of their Desirable Code of Corporate Governance, and has served as a Jury for the Union Government's National Award for Corporate Governance. More recently, he was a member of the Central Government Task Force on Corporate Excellence through Governance, recommending measures for legislation and regulation of corporate practices and behaviour. He is also a member of the Government's National Advisory Council on Accounting Standards.
